The Campaign to Unite Colorado Launches with a Great Event!

Colorado Communities Launch Hotline Investigating the Impacts of “Show Me Your Papers” Laws   Coloradans Can Call 1-855-UNITE-4-1 to Report Abuses Related to Immigration Enforcement       Denver, CO- On September 15, 2012 hundreds of community leaders across Colorado came together in Denver to announce a new statewide documentation hotline, which will begin collecting the evidence needed to repeal Colorado’s ”show me your papers” law. The hotline is part of the new Campaign to Unite Colorado. The campaign’s goal is to ensure that every person in Colorado can live and raise his or her family with trust and dignity, thus creating safe and thriving communities. The 1-855-UNITE-4-1 hotline marks the initiation of an intensive documentation and research effort to better understand the impacts of Colorado’s SB 90, a “show me your papers”-style law often considered to be a precursor to the embattled Arizona and Alabama immigration laws. Colorado law forces collaboration between local police and federal immigration by requiring local police to demand “papers” and report individuals to the federal government, often times for simple traffic stops. The Unite Colorado campaign argues that the “Show Me Your Papers” law has created an environment where basic civil liberties and rights are more likely to be abused, thus making communities feel less trust with local law enforcement. The hotline and subsequent documentation report will help educate Coloradans and state lawmakers on the harmful consequences of Senate Bill 90 to community safety.
